Bella's quilts

Bella is not able to post, so I will do this for her. The theme she has chosen is Jerusalem and here are her quilts:

The fabrics used are her own hand dyed ones plus screen printed.

Raw edge appliqué for the Bougainvillea, painted fusible web for the door, beads and french knots for the nails

I'll continue the same theme in 2015.

Picture from an archeological site in North Tunisia. For the arch : rusted and commercial fabrics

The different prints are made with a lino block, and compressed sponge
The poppies seed heads are painted with Derwent watercolor pencils.

They all comes of the same dyebath and for the back a had a commercial fabric, so they are the same too.
For this one I 've drawn some figures and they are raw edge appliqued. Some home made stamps too.

Last year the theme for the Art Quilts Around The World group was: "Opposites Attrackt" This was  A3 size.
I thought that I could use it again for my theme  People.. I've used the same figures, only bigger and a different background.
This fabric is also dyed with low-water immersion. I have four of them and I'm gonna use them all. So  I  changed my mind again and will make two more.
Letters and figures are drawn and colored with watercolor pens and textile paint.

In fact the colors are different. Gray/green and rost brown.

Finaly I finished my third one.
I used a hand dyed fabric (low-water immersion deying) and draw the text and the figure on it with a pencil and coloured them with watercolour pens.
As usual a LOT of quilting.  I found the text on internet.

I thought I had posted pictures of my 4 quilts as they were finished in May, but I only seem to have 2 on the blog, so here are the final 2

I made a study of a piece of textiles that I bought in the market in India. I used a piece of recycled black linen for the background, appiqued small pieces of fabric and machine stitched using a thick thread

Another piece inspired by a textile piece bought in the market.

I made a piece of blue fabric look old by bleaching and printing, then added hand stitching.

 Quilt n°2 Barn door.

         I’ve worked on a hand dyed fabric that I tore then shaded  with  Derwent ink pencils and quilted  with free  quilting machine. The foliage is applicated and  then colored with Derwent ink pencils.

 I have dyed my own fabric with rust and I have painted the back with acrylic.
The leaves are printed with the leaves painted with acrylic. I used machine quilting with polyester treads.

 

Wilderness Canoe Trip 4

Wilderness Canoe Trip – 4 A strong wind makes the once benign lake a more ominous companion. The wind pushes the water which forms strong diamond shaped waves, the whole moving mass glinting in the low sunlight. Paddling the canoe is hard and the water feels as dense as liquid cement as my paddle strokes through it. The inside of a halogen birthday balloon creates the silver glints, self dyed, pieced cotton is the top layer. Machine stitch and reverse applique.

Wilderness Canoe Trip -3 Zephyrs of wind create lines of ripples on the flat lake, ripples that seem to be creating almost parallel lines, creating tiny glints of reflection as the sun catches them, with dark pools of disturbed water upsetting the rhythm. The ripples appear to stretch to infinity when seen from my seat in the canoe at water level. Self dyed cotton as a base layer with a self dyed silk crepeline top layer. I left the bottom layer unironed to suggest more movement in the water. Stitched with hand quilting thread.

This is my second piece for "Trip to Tuscany" and I also posted the first one for everybody to see the difference...

Quilt 3.

Hand printed fabrics again using funky foam print blocks, stamps, bubble wrap. From my freehand drawings used for my first quilt I have used these by using cut out sections and appliqué. Lots of free machine stitch.

Duck!

Duck! no not for Donald, but beware the circles are falling :-). This working on a series is very addictive to me. This week I completed this quilt:

All fabrics are my own hand dyed ones. While I was working on this quilt I had a couple of other ideas as well so the next circle quilt is a work in process :-)).

Geometric shapes by Gloria Dighton

I have become addicted to  working on these quilts. My theme was to use geometric shapes to show depth or movement. I want to use black and white backgrounds and just evolved into using reds and gold for the shapes.  I have tried to use different techniques for finishing the quilts.

Overlapping circles

For my latest circle quilt I decided to use commercial batiks. The top has 4 layers and each layer has different sizes of circles in different places. After pinning all layers together the result is a see-through of the circles. As there were so many layers a facing was rather difficult, so I settled on a sheer yellow binding. Quilting design was a simple one, just following the design of the fabrics.

Tunisia Past and Present - Quilt No 2

Salammbô.
My second quilt is also about the past and Carthago. My inspiration was the historical novel by Gustave Flaubert set in Carthago and called Salammbô.

The text is an extract from the book, it is free motion quilted. The border is stencilled before being quilted.

 

Cut out from a black vliesofix (? not sure of the name of this product)the shadowed columns and site are taken from one of my picture.

 

I printed the fabric for the vase with acrylic on hand dyed fabric using a Greek vase I've at home as an inspiration.

Wilderness Canoe Trip – 2 Colours of the lake, coming both from the depths of water and the reflected light of an inky dawn sky. Every shade of blue, interspersed with almost blacks and almost greens shining with luminescent properties. The sky is linked to the huge lake as it meets the horizon and just a fine shimmer determines the division. Created using fabric scraps in many shades, stitched with metallic thread. “Clouds” created using quilting thread tied in loops.

Wilderness Canoe Trip – 1, A partially cloudy sky reflects in the glass-like glinting flatness of a huge and completely calm lake in the remote Boundary Waters of Minnesota. The tiny drips from my paddle as I make gentle progress through this vast stillness create rippled circles. The ripples grow in size and their effect on the flat water magnifies as I paddle forward. Created using a vintage piece of indigo dyed African fabric, hand stitched with various embroidery threads and glass beads.

Anonymous

My second quilt from my theme. In the beginning I had no idea. I played with some pics and printed them on fabric, cut it  and sew it together again. How to go further?
After a long thought I decided to add positive and negative figures and call it "Anonymous". They are always on the background, aren't they? The figures are fused and stitched on the background.
For some reason I'm not quite satisfied, don't know why? Is there something too much or something too little?

I will think about it. Any suggestions?

Memories of Leksand

Here is my second quilt, I will probably try to complete my 4 before May as I need to have at least 20 new quilts for my exhibition at Veldhoven in May. They need to be 60cm so my stitched pieces will be displayed there. I also needed to do some samples for my teaching showing the use of Burmilana thread so this has been a good exercise. The design is based on Swedish textiles seen in a museum in Leksand in the Dalarna region of Sweden.
